Lib Dem MEP demands equal marriage across Europe: "We can't have second class citizens"

A senior Liberal Democrat MEP has demanded the legalisation of equal marriage across the whole of Europe.

Liberal Democrat MEP Jane Brophy made the demands during the party's annual conference in Bournemouth today.

Same-sex marriage was legalised during the Lib Dems' time in Government, but it is still illegal in Northern Ireland and many parts of Europe.

The MEP called for equal marriage to be legalised in Northern Ireland and called on the European Parliament to exert its influence to further the cause of equal marriage across the continent.

Equal rights campaigner and Liberal Democrat MEP Jane Brophy said:

“The Liberal Democrats have long led the fight for equal marriage but there is still so much more to be done.

"Gay people are treated as second class citizens in Northern Ireland. It is a dereliction of citizens' rights and the situation is too desperate to wait any longer.

"We will continue to lead the fight for equal rights but it is time that the EU took a lead. It must champion and push for the legalisation of equal marriage in all member states and it must do so urgently."
